SpotAsk vs ChatGPT for Mac
A full ChatGPT workspace, or a menu bar box for quick questions?
The short answer
ChatGPT for Mac and SpotAsk both put AI behind a shortcut, but serve different needs. ChatGPT for Mac is OpenAI's desktop client for multi-turn conversations and account features. SpotAsk is a free, open-source menu bar quick-ask app: press Option+Space, connect directly to providers via your own API key, act on highlighted text, or route prompts to ChatGPT or local agents. It replaces the quick-ask habit, not the full workspace.
- Pick ChatGPT for Mac if you need ongoing project threads, Canvas, voice mode, and a flat monthly subscription.
- Pick SpotAsk if you want an instant ask box on Option+Space, direct BYOK token pricing, selected-text actions, or offline local models.
- Use both if you keep ChatGPT for deep sessions, but want SpotAsk for rapid questions and one-key hand-offs.

What each app is for
ChatGPT for Mac: The desktop account workspace
ChatGPT for Mac is OpenAI's official desktop client for extended work: organizing multi-turn chats into searchable projects, uploading files, collaborating in Canvas, and using Advanced Voice Mode. It also connects with developer tools like Xcode. All features require an OpenAI account and run within OpenAI's hosted cloud.
SpotAsk: The focused menu bar ask box
SpotAsk is built for quick lookups without opening a full client:
- Instant answers: Press ⌥ Space (Option+Space), get streamed answers, and dismiss with Escape.
- Selection Assistant: Highlight text anywhere and press ⌥ ⇧ Space (Option+Shift+Space) for Selection Assistant summaries or translations.
- Workflow hand-off: External Ask routes prompts to ChatGPT in your browser or local CLI agents with one shortcut.
- Direct BYOK privacy: Direct provider connections from your Mac with zero intermediate servers.

Quick ask versus a full chat workspace
The difference between ChatGPT for Mac and SpotAsk is scope: they serve different habits.
ChatGPT for Mac is built for extended context: multi-turn threads, document analysis, Canvas editing, and project research. That workflow benefits from persistent chat history and full-window management.
SpotAsk is built for micro-interactions: looking up flags, checking syntax, or explaining errors. Answering a quick question should not require opening a full desktop client, navigating windows, or clearing chat clutter. SpotAsk provides an ephemeral floating box over your active window, delivers the answer, and vanishes with Escape. When a prompt needs deeper dialogue, a single keypress routes it to ChatGPT in your browser.
Your ChatGPT subscription is not an API key
OpenAI operates two separate billing systems:
- ChatGPT account subscriptions: ChatGPT Plus ($20/month), Pro ($200/month), and Team plans provide access to
chatgpt.comand official apps as consumer subscriptions. - OpenAI developer platform API: Model access via API keys (at
platform.openai.com) is billed pay-per-token.
Your ChatGPT Plus subscription does not include API usage, and an API key does not give you ChatGPT Plus. OpenAI confirms account plans and API credits cannot be shared or exchanged.
SpotAsk uses the developer API model: your Mac connects directly to an API endpoint with your own key, paying only for consumed tokens—often pennies a month.
If you subscribe to ChatGPT Plus and prefer not to pay API fees, SpotAsk's External Ask opens prompts in chatgpt.com in your default browser, using your active Plus subscription at zero extra cost.
Price and account
ChatGPT for Mac pricing and account rules
Per OpenAI's documentation as of November 2026:
- The app is free to download, but requires an OpenAI account login.
- Free tier: Standard models with periodic caps, voice, and web search.
- ChatGPT Plus ($20/month): Higher limits on flagship models, Canvas, and Advanced Voice Mode.
- ChatGPT Pro ($200/month): Unlimited flagship reasoning access and maximum compute.
- ChatGPT Team ($25–$30/user/month): Shared workspaces and admin controls.
SpotAsk pricing and account rules
SpotAsk has no accounts, subscriptions, or paywalls:
- Free software: 100% free and open source under AGPL-3.0.
- No account required: No signups, email tracking, or telemetry.
- Direct token pricing: You pay only your provider for consumed tokens, or $0 with local models via Ollama or LM Studio.
Selected text and handing a question off
Screen workflows involve two tasks: acting on highlighted text, and routing prompts to the right tool.
Selected-text actions
Switching windows to copy and paste breaks focus:
- SpotAsk Selection Assistant: Highlight text anywhere and press ⌥ ⇧ Space (Option+Shift+Space) for presets like "Summarize" or "Explain" without clipboard roundtrips.
- ChatGPT for Mac: Supports companion integrations in select IDEs (like VS Code or Xcode), but lacks a global action bar for highlighted text across other apps.
Handing a question off (External Ask)
When a prompt outgrows a quick floating answer:
- Send to Web AI: SpotAsk's External Ask pre-fills prompts into
chatgpt.com/?q={query}in your default browser using your web login. This works with zero API keys configured in SpotAsk. - Dispatch to CLI agents: SpotAsk routes prompts directly into macOS terminal sessions or shell scripts. You can reproduce the ChatGPT + CLI hotkey workflow to test both paths from a single hotkey.
ChatGPT for Mac is a standalone destination, not a workflow router.
Privacy, credentials and direct connections
How an app handles credentials and network traffic is critical for proprietary code or sensitive data.
SpotAsk direct-to-provider routing
SpotAsk eliminates intermediate servers:
- Direct connections: Prompts travel directly from your Mac to provider endpoints (
api.openai.com, Anthropic, Gemini, or local127.0.0.1). Zero SpotAsk relay servers or logging proxies. - Local credential protection (
0600): API keys are saved locally in~/Library/Application Support/SpotAsk/credentials.jsonwith POSIX0600permissions (readable only by your macOS account). Keys never leave your machine, and SpotAsk does not write to macOS Keychain. - External Ask privacy boundary: When External Ask opens ChatGPT in your browser, that session is governed by OpenAI's privacy policy.
See our BYOK guide and Privacy Architecture.
ChatGPT for Mac architecture
ChatGPT for Mac routes prompts through OpenAI's hosted cloud. Consumer tiers may use chat data for model training unless opted out in account settings.
Using both apps
SpotAsk and ChatGPT for Mac work well together: use ChatGPT for project workspaces and voice, and SpotAsk as your menu bar hotkey for quick questions and text selection.
Resolving the Option+Space shortcut conflict
By default, both apps target ⌥ Space (Option+Space):
- ChatGPT for Mac: Option+Space opens Mini (or Chat Bar in ChatGPT Classic).
- SpotAsk: Option+Space opens the floating ask box.
Do not leave Option+Space assigned in both apps. If both claim the same key, macOS window activation is unpredictable.
Recommended setup:
- Keep SpotAsk on ⌥ Space for quick questions and ⌥ ⇧ Space for Selection Assistant.
- In ChatGPT settings under Keyboard shortcuts, reassign Show Mini to another shortcut (like ⌃ ⌥ Space).
- In ChatGPT Classic, reassign the Chat Bar shortcut or move SpotAsk.
See our ChatGPT Option+Space conflict guide for step-by-step instructions.
When ChatGPT for Mac is the better choice
Choose ChatGPT for Mac when your work centers on OpenAI's complete workspace:
- Persistent conversations & history: You organize multi-turn chats into project folders and search past discussions.
- Flat monthly subscription: You prefer paying $20/month for standard usage over managing developer API credits.
- Advanced Voice Mode & Canvas: You rely on conversational voice or side-by-side Canvas document editing.
- OpenAI team workspaces: You use ChatGPT Team or Enterprise with centralized administration and shared settings.
When SpotAsk is the better choice
Choose SpotAsk when you want a fast, private ask box:
- Instant floating ask box: Press Option+Space, get an answer, and dismiss with Escape—no windows or chat clutter.
- 100% Free & open source (AGPL-3.0): Transparent, auditable code with zero subscriptions or credit caps.
- True BYOK privacy: Direct connections to OpenAI-compatible, Anthropic, Gemini, or local models (Ollama/LM Studio) with keys stored locally (
0600). - Selection Assistant: Highlight text anywhere and press Option+Shift+Space to summarize or translate in place.
- Workflow routing (External Ask): Route prompts to ChatGPT in your browser or local CLI agents with one shortcut—even without an API key.
- No account required: No signups, email tracking, or telemetry.

FAQ
Is SpotAsk a full replacement for ChatGPT for Mac?
No. SpotAsk replaces the quick-ask habit—a floating hotkey box for fast answers, text actions, and routing—not OpenAI's full workspace. For persistent project threads, voice mode, or Canvas, ChatGPT for Mac is the better choice.
Can I use my ChatGPT Plus subscription as an API key in SpotAsk?
No. A ChatGPT Plus subscription covers chatgpt.com and official apps; it does not include developer API credits. SpotAsk connects directly to provider APIs with your own API key (BYOK).
Is SpotAsk free?
Yes. SpotAsk is 100% free and open source under AGPL-3.0 with no subscriptions. You pay only your provider's direct API usage, or $0 with local models like Ollama.
Can SpotAsk send a question to ChatGPT?
Yes. SpotAsk's External Ask opens queries directly in chatgpt.com in your browser using your existing web login, even with no API key configured.
Can I use ChatGPT for Mac and SpotAsk together?
Yes, if they use different shortcuts. Because both may default to Option+Space, keep Option+Space for SpotAsk and move ChatGPT (Mini or Popout Window) to another shortcut.
